Roller shutters are physical measures implemented on a property to protect against forced entry. There are several types of roller shutters, ranging from window and internal roller shutters, to shop front shutters.

Serving as a durable and visible deterrent, roller shutters are highly effective and can be specified for both high-risk and low-risk properties. These shutters can be used for a wide range of applications, such as commercialresidentialgovernment and financial institutions, among many more.

Essentially, a shutter provides an additional and retractable layer of protection for entrances and apertures. Assuming that other security measures already set in place are enough protection can have costly consequences.

A burglar typically targets properties with inadequate security. Deploying shutters discourages burglars from initially considering an attack. Even if they decide to pursue forced entry, roller shutters dramatically increase the length of time a criminal spends trying to gain access to a property.

Apart from deterring intruders, shutters are highly reliable in preventing vandalism for windows and doors.

A roller shutter must undergo specific testing, to assess whether it meets certain standards. The conditions of the tests vary depending on the authority body, but these tests mainly focus on the types of tools a shutter must resist and the amount of time the shutter delays attempted entry. For more information on security ratings, we’ve created a detailed guide that you can access for free here.

Reinforcing an existing doorway or window with an independently certified shutter will not only discourage petty crime but efficiently protect the property from serious risks including bodily forcepower toolsballistic, and blast.

Certified roller shutters reduce the risk posed to a site. This may result in reduced insurance premiums, as you are less likely to need to claim.

Charter Global have implemented roller shutters on hundreds of properties over the years. Our roller shutters currently offer the most comprehensive range of independent certifications on the market. These certifications include LPS 1175, Secured By Design (SBD), CPNI, and US Department of State approved.

We understand the risks a roller shutter needs to protect against better than most, as well as the best methods of integration for each property type.

LockDown is a security system for roller shutters that prevents the shutter from being raised by lifting the bottom rail. If any upward force is applied to either the shutter lath or the bottom rail, the profiles lock within the side guides and prevent the shutter from opening.

What are roller shutters?

Roller shutters (or security roller shutters) are physical measures implemented on a property to protect against forced entry. There are several types of shutters, ranging from window and internal shutters, to shop front roller shutters. Serving as a durable and visible deterrent, roller shutters are highly effective and can be specified for both high-risk and low-risk properties. Security roller shutters can be used for a wide range of applications such as commercial, residential, government and financial institutions, among many more.

How do roller shutters work?

Roller shutters are composed of various laths that work by sliding up and down the shutter’s side guides. When switching to an open position, the laths are rolled into and stored inside a headbox. A roller shutter can be integrated within the structure of the building during the early stages of construction. It can also be installed as a retrofit measure.

How strong are security roller shutters?

A growing number of property protection products, including roller shutters, are security tested by the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) to a range of security ratings. The Loss Prevention Standard (LPS) 1175 is becoming increasingly recognised amongst security consultants, specifiers, risk managers and property owners as it provides a framework to assess products against an identified risk.

LPS 1175 Security Ratings describe the different categories the LPS 1175 standard defines for the resistance grade of a physical security product. The performance ratings SR2 through to SR8 are the most relevant, specifically designed to imitate different risk scenarios. This useful diagram from BRE shows the areas of asset protection that the LPS 1175 standard is relevant to and the measures that cover all other areas of asset protection:

How much do roller shutters cost?

Charter Global are proud to work with specialist projects by providing security solutions for unique requirements, therefore, we do not have standard products for a particular cost. If you would like to obtain a project-specific quotation for a product, click here to contact us and we would be happy to process your enquiry.

Discretion is essential. Unattractive, invasive shutters will detract from the look of a property. So, if aesthetics is important for you, be sure to look for shutters that can be discreetly rolled away when not in use. Lastly, keep in mind whether you need your shutter to interact with other, third-party security systems. Charter global are experts in assessing potential security threats and providing aesthetic, robust solutions. Contact our team for more information.

Should I be servicing my property’s roller shutters?

It is vital to establish a roller shutter servicing contract early on, to ensure ongoing performance is maximised. Roller shutters, regardless of manufacturer, are serious pieces of machinery. Regular use will make a roller shutter susceptible to general wear and tear. There are a number of options available for the ongoing maintenance of your roller shutters;

  1. Service contracts offered from the manufacturer.
  2. Service contracts offered by independent companies.
  3. Ongoing maintenance by on-site facilitators.

Whilst service contracts are not compulsory, there are heavy implications should there be a failure.

Having your security roller shutter serviced is a legal requirement. Relevant for business premises and public facilities, employers must take all reasonable actions to safeguard employee’s welfare and the public’s safety. One part of this is scheduled maintenance relevant to roller shutters, in accordance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. Find out more here.
